Europatat Congress draws large crowds

Last Friday, the Europatat Congress took place in Antwerp, Belgium. Despite the plentiful competing attractions in and around the city, the congress was visited by many people.

During the morning, topics such as improving seeds and plant health were discussed. After lunch, Véronique Willems, Secretary General UEAPME, spoke about the importance of one Europe. “I am a strong believer,” was one of the lines she used. Véronique believes it’s important to cooperate more as one Europe, in order to have more power regarding globalisation.

Promotions by the European Commission
Lene Naesagar of the European Commission, DG AGRI, explained how much money the European Commission has for promotions in the agricultural sector, and how it spends the money. She also indicated how campaigns, visits to fairs and business trips organised by them can be used. She has developed manuals for companies that wish to export, regarding what to bear in mind in certain countries regarding regulations as well.

Brexit
Cedric Porter of the World Potato Market closed with the topic many were waiting for: Brexit and the potato sector. He entered with a piggy bank, pictured left. There isn’t much money in it yet, but the question was how that would develop over the next six months. He explained the possible consequences of a Brexit for the potato sector for both the UK and the European Union. “But forget the Brexit,” Cedric said. “The real opportunities are outside Europe.” He closed with figures that showed there are also options outside of the EU. In his final conclusion, he indicated that, because of complications and the election result “A Brexit will most likely happen, but the chances of a Breturn have also increased.”
