Start of bayberry season, China's endemic berry

"This year's bayberry season in Yunnan province Shi ping county has kicked off. It's red bayberries will hit the market sooner than all the country's other regions. The season is likely to end at the end of May. The region's bayberries have already entered the market on May 15th. In general, the production output and product quality this year are not bad at all," says mister Cui Yixin from the Lilai Trading company in Shiping county (Yunnan province).

"Because red bayberries require a very special environment to grow in, the Chinese output of bayberries has been rather stable for many years. In comparison to last year, this year's output of red bayberries in Shiping is only a little higher. This is mainly because we have benefited from favorable weather conditions, especially the cloudy and rainy days in April and the beginning of May have had a positive impact on the growth of the Dongkui oriental fruit bayberries."

"Our red bayberry plantation is located in Yunnan province's Shi ping county. We mainly grow 'water chestnut' bayberries and 'oriental pearl' bayberries. On last year's fields with of 15 hectares, we have planted 3000 bayberry bushes this year. The majority of the bayberries produced here are sold through traditional and electronic platforms under the "Guo ran shu le" brand. These channels mainly cater to the markets and supermarkets in Chinese first and second tier cities, but a lot of bayberries are also sold to Europe, Canada and other countries after going through the trading posts in Shanghai, Shenzhen or Hong Kong."

"We carry out strict monitoring of the bayberry plants and fruits we grow in our enterprise, which does not only raise the standards of our products but also makes us different from other bayberry producers. Everybody knows that, when it comes to bayberries, preservation is the most difficult. This is why the bayberries on the market that have completely been naturally ripened are very rarely seen. We use a physical preservation method with five layers that places the bayberries in a vacuum, and combine this with a method of cold preservation. By doing so, our products are still fresh and tasty after 5 days. The red bayberries that have gone through this preservation process do not only have a dark red color and a beautiful appearance, their taste is also excellent. Therefore, the supply of our red bayberries has not been meeting market demand for the past couple of years, and the price has been stable. At present, our red bayberries have hit the market in large amounts, so customers who would like to purchase some can order beforehand."
