Danish rhubarb back on the shelves

This year has brought an early spring, so rhubarb production is in full swing in Denmark, with all expectations set for a good year.

"We expanded our production area by 1 hectare last year, bringing the total production area to 8 hectares. However, it takes about one year for the new plants to come to maturity and the older plants need to be replaced every 10 years or so." shared Brian from Frigaard.

The rhubarb is currently being sold on the domestic market, but Brian plans on continuing their expansion of production with an eye on exports. The company is interested in finding new partners in other countries to work with.

Frigaard packs their rhubarb in resealable bags so consumers can use what they need and the rest can be left in the refrigerator, with a much longer shelf life. This type of packaging increases the shelf life by as much as one week. The rhubarb is hand-packed, directly from the field, so that it stay fresh for as long as possible.

The company is also conscious of growing consumer interest in learning more about what they are eating.

"There is a recipe on the back so they can see what they can use it for, as well as a little company description so they can see where the rhubarb comes from." said Brian.
