Mexico: Fire destroys avocado plantations in Morelos

According to the census in Santa Maria Ahuacatitlan de El Cebadal and Buena Vista del Monte, the fire on March 21 affected one hundred percent of the avocado orchards.

Thus, the City council of Cuernavaca, which is going to support the shareholders of common land (ejidatarios) with plant material, is working on a technology package, fertilizers, plant hormones, and the rehabilitation of water collection and irrigation systems.

This was announced by Oscar Santos Martinez, director of Sustainable Rural Development of this municipality, who said that the fire affected 42 hectares and that they would conduct studies to determine how much support they would give each ejidatario.

He said the idea was to implement a comprehensive plan that consists of rehabilitating the trees through a study and recover the water catchment pots that were devastated by the fire.

He also said that they had planned to implement a comprehensive program to support and rehabilitate all the irrigation systems that were affected by the fire to recover what was lost.

Santos Martinez said the census showed that over 50 percent of the affected areas were of avocado orchards that were in full production, and that the trees were 13 years old.

He acknowledged that the scenario for the avocado producers was hard and said that the City Council of Cuernavaca was working with the State's Plant Health Committee to support the 45 producers affected by the last week's fire in this area.
