Hans van der Meulen, Rida Trade:

“Demand for ginger increases annually in Europe”

The Chinese ginger season is in full swing for Rida Trade. “We have a good supply and prices are fairly stable. As we’re nearing summer, sales traditionally decrease somewhat, so it’s expected we’ll get a bit of price pressure. Nevertheless, prices remain quite high in China,” says Hans van der Meulen from Rida Trade, Poeldijk.

Chinese and Thai ginger

The sales of ginger increase annually in Europe, and that’s also the case for Rida Trade, which grows its own ginger in Shandong, China. “We expect to import approximately 500 containers this year,” says Hans. “The quality of the ginger is very good this year. We also have organic ginger in our range, and in addition to the Chinese range, we also have Thai ginger. This product is characterised by slightly smaller cloves and a shinier appearance. Prices are similar to those of Chinese ginger. The sales of 5-kilogram packaging are going very well. We are strong with this product, and do a lot with it.”

Rida Trade currently completes the Chinese season with the supply of new harvest orange and purple-fleshed sweet potatoes.

Nashi pears will soon arrive in the distribution centre in Poeldijk, and the company has a constant supply of Shimeji and Eryngii mushrooms. “We can look back on the first quarter with satisfaction. Demand was very good,” Hans concludes.
