"Egypt: "Orange prices are better than last year's"

The Valencia orange season, which started in Egypt in mid-January, is currently in full swing. According to Reda Mohamed, of Grand Egypt Agro Co, "the market situation is much better than last year's. We are receiving many requests from countries in Europe and Asia." The countries that show the greatest interest in Valencia oranges from Egypt are the Netherlands, Italy, Malaysia, Singapore, India and Bangladesh, which consume 70% of the production of Grand Egypt Agro Co.

At the moment, "the price of oranges is much better than that recorded in the same period last year, mostly due to the exchange rate between the dollar and the Egyptian pound," states Mohamed. However, "we must remain watchful, since there are countries that, because of their proximity, like Spain, or their low labour costs, such as Turkey, can be great competitors."
