Gerry Li, Rida Trade: “Broad Chinese range available from Poeldijk”

New harvest of Chinese ginger arrives on tense market

The new harvest of Chinese ginger has arrived at Rida Trade. According to sales manager Gerry Li, it will be engrossing to see what the season will do. “Cost price in China is around 17 euro, while prices in Europe are at a relatively low level. We expect demand for the new harvest of ginger to pick up quickly, because the quality of the old harvest is no longer very good. The new ginger harvest is completely dry and has a good quality. We re-pack the ginger in packaging of 1, 2, 4 and 5 kilograms.”

Rida Trade cultivates ginger in Shandong in China. The company also has organic ginger available. “That might not be as big a market, but it is one that is growing significantly. We expect a large market for organic ginger in future,” Li says.

Last autumn, the sales office of the Chinese production company moved from Den Hoorn to the ABC-lot in Poeldijk, where it has a spacious warehouse with nine loading docks at its disposal. “The move was a good step. We are now centrally located for our customers, and furthermore, the location is ideal, logistically speaking,” Li continues. The company focuses on wholesalers throughout Europe with its sales.

Besides ginger, Rida Trade also offers an extensive Chinese range, including sweet potatoes, garlic, mushrooms, chestnuts, nashi pears and eddoes. “Sweet potatoes are still relatively unknown in Europe compared to product from the US and Honduras, but we have good volumes available from China, and it is good quality as well as GlobalGAP certified, which we can offer at a good price. Our mushroom assortment has grown by now, from Eryngii to Shimeji, and we also expect the first Shii-take in the long run. All of our mushrooms are also available as organic,” Li concludes.
