Record high pineapple prices quash Danish demand

The pineapple market is pretty much non-existent in Denmark at the moment due to a huge spike in prices. The flowering problems with pineapples grown in Ecuader and Cost Rica has reduced production, so those who do have pineapples are getting a lot of money for them, said a source who works for a major importer in Denmark.

The Danish supplier said that they source their pineapples from the Netherlands. Usually, at this time of year, the tropical fruit costs a maximum of €8 per box, but prices are now between €14-16 per box, which is almost double. Prices for organic pineapples are also currently through the roof, approximately 20% higher than usual.

"It has become too expensive to sell pineapples for these kind of prices. We expect that the next 3 to 5 weeks will stay as they are, until the next wave of supplies starts coming in. Planting is several times per year, so we are hoping that the situation will improve with the next harvest." said the importer.

Most of the supply for the general consumer is now coming from Ghana, although this is not preferred due to quality issues. Costa Rican pineapples are still coming in small amounts and those who have the money to spend on them do since they are much sweeter.
