Mexico: Michoacan exported over 1 million tons of avocado

The Secretary of Rural Development and Agricultural Food, Israel Tentory Garcia stated during the second ordinary session of the State Council for Integral Sustainable Rural Development that

Thanks to the quality and certified health and safety of its fruits, Michoacan was able to export over one million tons of avocado.

Tentory Garcia stated in the event, which includes producers from different crops throughout the state as well as authorities from the agricultural, fishery, and forestry sector, that they had invested 93.3 million pesos to carry out 16 plant health campaigns this year.

Thanks to these phytosanitary tasks, Michoacan still ranks first worldwide in the planting, production and export of avocado, 33 municipalities are declared Free of Borers Bone, 147,000 hectares are registered and are taken care of, and the state has proposals to export to different markets, such as the US and Japan.

Tentory Garcia said there were over 30,000 hectares of mango, guava, and grapefruit that benefited from the campaign against the fruit fly, and that to date they had achieved having 8 areas of low prevalence.

The plant health boards also achieved promoting the export of 60,000 tons of mango to the United States. The plant health board is also combating the HLB citrus pest on more than 43,000 hectares of these crops in the valley area of Apatzingan and in the coast of the state.

Michoacan is an area that is free of exotic fruit flies, as it has strengthened and protected the trade competitiveness of more than 250,000 hectares of various crops.
