Peru sends a first container of mandarins to the US

Exporters and producers rejoiced as the first container of mandarins from the region of La Libertad to the US, which marks an important milestone in the history of Peruvian agricultural exports, was made. After successfully passing the inspections requested by the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the respective agencies, Camposol shipped its first container of mandarins to the US last Friday, on July 8.

This represents a challenge and an opportunity for Camposol, because the Peruvian citrus exports to the United States would increase from 30% in 2014 to 39% in 2020 (Source: MINAGRI).

Javier Morales, CEO of Camposol Fruit & Vegetable, said the United States is a country with great potential, as it annually consumes an average of 700,000 tons of mandarins. "There is a great market opportunity in the United States, primarily in the window where Peru produces and exports most of its mandarins, which is between the months of May to October, because of local mandarin production's seasonality," said Morales.

This milestone was made possible thanks to the joint work of private enterprise with public entities such as SENASA, which, led by Jorge Barnechea, continues to open new markets for Peruvian agricultural exports.

Other data
- Camposol has 101 hectares devoted to mandarin cultivation (easy peeler and seedless) and it provides job opportunities to more than 800 people in its high season.

- According to projections, they will have 600 hectares by 2018, which means they will export more than 1,000 containers between April and October.

- In 2015, Peru, exported about 100,800 tons of mandarins.

- Currently, Peru is the largest producer of mandarins in South America.
