Cold weather caused unstable quality

Sichuan citrus season: high production, lower price

"Citrus fruit is available on the markt starting from March until the end of May. This production season is already nearing its end. The season has been good. Overall output and sales have gone up. As a result prices have come down by 20% compared to the same period last year," says Mrs. Liu Mei of Jintai Funong from the city of Chengdu, Sichuan province.

"Regarding production, citrus fruits are sensitive to weather conditions, diseases and insects. The cold weather of 2016 did influence overall citrus production of the whole region. There is a nationwide drop in output, but the quality is very diverse. It influenced buyers too, leading to a drop of 20% in the average market price for citrus fruit compared to the same period last year."

Drop in kiwi fruit production
"Kiwi fruit is another main product of the company. It goes on the market from mid August until the end of December and the beginning of January. Its production process is mainly influenced by the amount of rainfall. Since there was a lot of rain this year, there was a drop in the output to a certain degree. The result is a 20% to 30% surge in market price."

"Our company was established in September 2014 and is located near Chengdu in Sichuan province. We have to plant basis of respectively 134 and 400 hectares, where we grow mainly citrus and kiwifruit. Our main varieties of citrus fruit are Ugli, Chunjian en Qingjian."
