“We count three plantations with a total of 60 hectares of land available for production. Also, two packing houses secure quick handling of the fruit and promt dispatch to the airport. Our main markets have always been the United States and Canada with more than 300.000 kilos of export. Recently we have also started exporting to Holland, France and Italy by air. We wish that more people within the EU could discover this exotic fruit and experience what thousands of people enjoy every year”, continues Byron.
He explains that their season starts in August and ends in December. However, the last two years they experienced that global climate change is affecting these patterns. “For instance, in 2015 the season didn’t start until late October instead of August. We experienced drought in Honduras, which caused this delay. This not only puts stress on the Rambutan trees and fruit, but also on the financial status of companies like us, that sole income is achived by means of once a year sale. Never the less, climate improve by the end of 2015 and orders were able to be delivered. We believe that the season of 2016, will not be so affected by the El Niño. On the positive side, this drought climate condition has forced us to be more efficient, since new ways to process fruit have been developed.”According to Byron, Frutas Exoticas will be present during the Fruit Logistica thanks to the cooperation of the Dutch CBI office with their promotion of developing countries and their export coaching program. “It always strikes me. For example that during my first Fruit Logistica, a German lady approached our stand and boldly asks: what is it that you sell, fruit or boxes? I quickly open one fruit and after she overcomes her fear that the rambutan´s hairs are not thorns, she took it in her hand and tasted the fruit. She said she never knew it was such a good fruit, it just looks odd. She left and with a smile and a couple of rambutans to show to her friends.”
