Sanguinelli campaign kicks off with very limited volumes

While the orange and clementine harvest is mostly starting earlier than usual in Spain's main production areas due to the high temperatures, Sanguinelli oranges are in the exact opposite situation, as this variety's campaign has started with a lower supply than last season.

"We have just started the Sanguinelli campaign, although volumes are much more limited than last season due to the lack of cold. For this variety, a contrast with low night temperatures is essential for an optimal ripening of the pulp and for the fruit to adopt its characteristic red colour, which makes it so special," explains Abel Alarcón, manager of Agrios Selectos (Brio Fruits). "Everything is moving very slowly, so we hope to have more availability from February," he adds.

The Sanguinelli is not a fruit many operators work with and its sales channels are usually in the gourmet sector, which gives it a sense of exclusivity.

According to the exporter, last year there was an increase in the demand for this variety, especially in Germany. France and the UK are traditional markets for the Sanguinelli, as well as Italy, although only at the end of the campaign, when Italian growers do not have their own production of Blood oranges, since at this time they have varieties like the Tarocco.

"This year we expect to increase our sales transactions with this product. Every year we manage to register a slight growth with the Sanguinelli," affirms Abel Alarcón.
