Spanish persimmon competing in Hong Kong

Strong season Chinese persimmon export

“Last year, we exported 70% of our persimmon crop,” says Jingle Liu of JinTaiHua Agriculture Products. “We export to Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Hong Kong is a big export market for us. In Hong Kong, our crop competes with South Korean, Australian and Spanish persimmon. The South Korean season starts two months later than we do, so there is not much overlap. The difference is last season Spanish persimmon were doing well on the market. Spanish persimmon is sold at lower prices than our crop. I am not too worried about this however. The Spanish governments support the export of agri products to Hong Kong, that is why prices could be below market prices. This will not last.”

The Australian persimmon season will start later in January. It runs counter to the Chinese season, which runs from August until December.

“Within China, we have little competition. It takes three to five years before a persimmon tree is mature enough to bear fruit. Not many producers grow persimmon and it takes a while before new producers are up to speed. As a result there are few competitors in China. In addition, we grow the fruit at high altitudes, away from pollution. This is another advantage. Most persimmon is grown in the Fujian and Yunnan provinces.”

“30% of our persimmons are sold to wholesale markets and big supermarkets in Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Shanghai. We are looking for export markets, but have been facing some storage and transportation problems to cover very long distances. We are working on this. In the future we want to open new markets in Europe."

“I am positive about the coming summer. Our sales have climbed each year in the last 9 years.”
