Raffaele Bucella (Granfrutta Zani)

Europe: The winter campaign is not going as expected

Raffaele Bucella from OP Granfrutta Zani talks about the summer and autumn-winter fruit campaign before attending Fruit Logistica (3-5 February 2016).

OP Granfrutta Zani during the last edition of Fruit Logistica.

"People talked a lot about the 2015 summer campaign. For us too, it was positive for certain products (apricots, plums, baby watermelons) and, while it was a better season than 2014 for some other products, it still was not satisfying as often their production costs were not even covered."

"For what concerns the winter campaign, things are not going as expected for pears, though it seems Abate are doing better. Demand for Kaiser and Conference remains low."

As regards apples, "the market has been quiet so far and quotations are similar to last year. Grades are smaller than a normal year, which is a problem as the domestic market prefers big grades."

"Kiwis are getting us the most worried, as there is a lot of produce in stock and markets are buying from Greece. Grades are rather small due to the summer heat and the abundant production. This in turn means prices are fine for big grades, though those of smaller fruit remain very low, so it will be a disappointing season for producers."

In Berlin, OP Granfrutta Zani will not present new products but aims at promoting the Metis stonefruit range, which did well in 2015. "Sales last year were five times those of 2014."

During Fruit Logistica, Granfrutta Zani will take part in the press conference presenting the activities and future projects of Origine Group.

The stand will be part of the Cso "Italy" (Hall 2.2, Stand A-04) area. General manager Sandro Zani, marketing manager Elisa Zani, Raffaele Bucella (Italy sales manager), the entire foreign sales office (Enrico Silighini, Marco Sanviti and Francesca Borghi) and import manager Euro Bassi will attend.
