China: citrus fruits hit the market, prices drop

At this moment citrus fruits enter the market, accounting for one third of the fruit supply in the large supermarkets. Main varieties are: Shatang orange, tangerine and mandarin. During this season citrus prices are low while the quality is good, because of this citruses are very popular with consumers. Although it is normal that prices are not high during this time, prices have dropped noticeably. Even the price of Newhall Oranges has dropped from 6.9 Yuan per kilo to 3.9 Yuan per kilo, a price drop of 43%.

Currently, a lot of the same fruit varieties are on the market. However, the local tangerine harvest period is already ending, creating some space on the market for other citrus varieties. A lot of merchants are urging to sell, prices will drop a lot. In addition, due to the recent frost, the taste of the recent harvested honey tangerines is not as good as other tangerines. To reduce the loss costs, a lot of merchants are starting to lower the prices.

The peak period of citruses entering the market is at the end of this month. At this time citrus prices will drop even further.
