Oscar Avalos, head of the Lime Producers' State Council (Coeplim), said that Colima's lime production was rebounding compared to 2014, although he mentioned that it was still 400 daily tons below Michoacan.
He said that producers had managed to get by and rebound their production despite the permanence of the HLB disease, or "yellow dragon".
"Fortunately, people have been doing the right thing. Producers have been responsible and have complied with the recommendations that the technicians and researchers have given them regarding the HLB," he said.
He regretted that some farmers abandoned their land because many of them had perceived a drastic decrease in yields, but he said he felt lime cultivation remained a profitable activity in the State of Colima.
The head of the Coeplim highlighted the growth in the last year, "Compared to 2014 Colima is rebounding in terms of production. Right now we are producing 800 tons per day, while Michoacan produces more than 1,200 tons," he said.
Regarding prices he stated: "Prices in Colima are about 5.50 and 6 pesos per kilo, and even though we wish the prices were higher we can say that, unlike other years, it is beneficial for producers."
Things have gotten a little bit harder because of the increase in price of basic supplies for the field, "today we must work a little harder, as inputs and fuel cost more money."
