The citrus season is underway at Sai World, lemons and early Navels already being harvested in the Riverland, Australia.
"We have started in the Riverland with the first lemons, small volumes for both the domestic and export markets," said Sam Vasala, from Sai World. "The season is looking very good. After two bad ones, this is very welcome."
"The early Navels are also looking good for color and sizing; the growing conditions have been much better this year. The harvest has started early, and the fruit has low acid levels and good brix, which I think will increase as we go through the season. It's looking like the best season for a few years. I have heard that there may be a shortage of fruit in Asia with South Africa being short and some sizes will be in demand. Australia will most likely finished early due to our early start."
Sai World works with Devlin's Pound, and they will complete a new packing shed in a couple of weeks will increase capacity.
"We are really looking forward to our easy peel Navel which will start at the end of May, we are the only people to grow them. We had a very successful year last year."
