Italy: Verdello harvesting campaign has started

The harvesting campaign of Verdello lemons from Sicily has started. "Volumes are not particularly abundant, so the season should be medium-scarce. In a period where yellow lemons are no longer seasonal, tough, Verdellos are important because we can still provide a domestic product to the market," explains Giovanni D'Agati (in the photo), chairman of the "Il Tardivo di Ciaculli" consortium.

Prices hover between €0.90-1.00. "Last year, we reached €1.40, but it is still the beginning. The peak of the campaign will be from mid-July onwards. Verdello lemons will be available until September-October. Then it will be the time for green Primofiore. In addition, in the past few years, the limes and Argentinian lemons meant people rediscovered Verdello lemons."

"Of course these lemons are not the best looking (they are also called 'bastards' because they are produced from the third blossoming of a tree), but they are good, clean and Italian. Nothing to do with the produce from Argentina, South Africa and Uruguay - while it is more appealing, it is treated with chemicals."

According to the chairman, Verdello lemons are very acidic and exalt the taste of food. "They have less juice than imported lemons, but have an excellent acidity and an unmistakeable aroma. In addition, it is also possible to use the peel."

"We wash the produce in our warehouse with water and then deliver it to retailer. Verdello lemons are available at Esselunga, Conad Centro Nord, Coop Centrale Adriatica and Eataly. Unfortunately it is not available abroad because it is not treated and would therefore not survive long trips."
