US (CA): Sweet corn market steadies
After a strong start to the sweet corn season in California, prices have come down. With steady volumes, the market is steady.
“The market started off strong at the beginning, but then it dropped off,” said Danielle Cultrera of Van Groningen and Sons. That was partly due to Mexican imports trailing off earlier than usual because of weather-related issues with volume. That, combined with low domestic supplies that usually mark the beginning of the California season during the first part of April, made for higher prices earlier in the season.
“Demand has been steady, and volumes are good,” said Cultrera. “Right now, we're growing corn in the Imperial Valley, and harvesting should go through Memorial Day.” With volumes stabilized and no fluctuations in demand, the market came down off the high earlier in the year. On April 30, prices for a carton of sweet yellow corn were between $10.95 and $13.95 out of the Imperial and Coachella Valleys. Prices were between $10.95 and $12.95 for a carton of white corn and bi-color corn.
