China: Ginger prices this season lower than last year

The ginger market in China is quite stable at the moment, although prices are between 20 and 30% lower than last year. As a result, “Growers are currently in no hurry to sell, as just like garlic, ginger can be kept in storage until better selling prices can be obtained,” according to Anyuan Wang of Rizhao Zhengming Foods Co., China.

Regarding the situation for his company, he affirms that, “Compared to the previous season, prices have been low, although they are more acceptable now, since over the last two weeks they have increased by USD 400-500 dollars. The current price is OK to export now, although shipments will slow down from April, since Brazil and Peru will also enter the market with large volumes.”
25% of Rizhao Zhengming´s ginger goes to the Middle East which demands smaller, cheaper ginger, while the other 75% goes to the EU market, where it supplies premium quality produce at the best prices. “In addition to our regular range, we can also supply organic ginger, which we export mostly to the Netherlands. Demand for it is on the rise especially in the Dutch market,” he explains.
