Peru: Capsicum exports increased by 38%

The Exporters Association (Adex) stated that capsicum exports in the first month of 2015 amounted to US $18,032,680, i.e. 38% more than the US $13,064,209 achieved in the same month of 2014. 

In terms of volume, exports of canned, dried, fresh and frozen capsicum in January this year amounted to 8,901,542 kilos, 23.1% more when compared to the 7,231,616 kilos shipped in January last year.

According to the association, the biggest shipments of capsicum in January were of canned capsicum, which amounted to US $11,807,622 and increased by 68% when compared to the US $7,018,960 obtained in January 2014. The volume shipped in the first month of 2015 was 6,423,414 kilos, i.e. 55% more than the 4,136,499 kilos exported in January last year.

Exports of dry capsicum (whole, crushed and sliced) in January this year amounted to US $5,539,344, while in January 2014 it totalled US $5,541,062. The volume exported amounted to 2,206,373 kilos, 21% less than the 2,785,101 kilos shipped in January 2014.

Frozen capsicum exports totalled $565,872, 23% more than the US $460,012 shipped last year. The volume of frozen capsicum totalled 206,012 kilos, 30% less than the 293,711 kilos sent in January 2014. 

Adex highlighted this product's prices were good in international markets.

The biggest increase in prices was for fresh capsicum, which went from US $44.175 in January 2014 to $119.842 in January 2015, i.e. a 171% increase. The volume increase was higher (303%), as it went from 16,305 kilos in January 2014 to 65,742 kilos in the first month of 2015.

Major capsicum markets
The main markets for Peruvian capsicum were the U.S. with 4,444,868 kilos (US $ 8,340,145), Spain with 2,238,729 kilos (US $ 4,985,724), Mexico 414,040 kilos (US $ 1,344,925), Germany 335,691 kilos (US $633,912), Canada 245,813 kilos ($489,410), Australia 165,043 kilos ($321,625), France 97,032 kilos ($279,701), Belgium 128,342 kilos ($260,343), the UK 192,926 kilos ($237,481), Puerto Rico 113,356 kilos ($194,896), and the remaining 525,701 kilos ($944,157) were shipped to other destinations.

According to Adex, the leading exporters of capsicum in Peru were: Gandules, which shipped 2,621,140 kilos (US $4,375,915); Sociedad Agricola Viru, 1,088,383 kilos ($2,398,055); Agricultural Ecosac, 807,034 kilos ($1,473,818); Trujillo Danper 849,778 kilos ($1,350,749); Camposol 507,047 kilos ($1,029,097). 

Other companies include Green Peru, 335,702 kilos ($981,092); Industrial Comercial Holguin e Hijo, 290,304 kilos ($ 903,205); Outspan Peru, 266,979 kilos ($801,851); Capsicum Andino, 584,505 kilos ($549,406); Peppers America, 114,398 kilos ($399,549); and other companies 1,436,271 kilos ($3,769,942).
