"Benny Cuypers: "Due to large domestic supply and competition from Spain"

Difficult aubergine season

The Belgian greenhouse vegetable season is slowly starting to get going. Compared to last year the productions are slightly later. According to Benny Cuypers of LAVA, the domestic aubergine season has been on the go for a number of weeks now. "Our area has remained stable and there are larger volumes already available at the moment," he indicates. "Unfortunately this is making the market difficult and the prices are very moderate. It also has to do with the fact that there is still Spanish production available on the market. This is causing price pressure."

As far as the courgettes are concerned the greenhouse season has just started. "The supply is still quite limited, but this means the prices are solid," concludes Benny. "The courgette season will have full volumes in around a month. Now it's still too early to say much about it."
