Israel: Demand exceeding supply for Hass, Pinkerton stable
“Sales are going well,” said Ronen Eisenberg, fruit export manager for Mehadrin. “Demand for Hass is very high, and we are facing problems supplying demand.” That's also been the case for Pinkerton avocados, though, green-skinned varieties, in general, have not enjoyed good demand.
“The Pinkerton is a much wanted variety and most of the volume comes in a good period from January- March,” he continues. The reason for the popular green-skinned Pinkerton is the shelf life and size. “I assume that many importers prefer to work with this variety.”
The second half of the season, which runs from January through March, features Hass, Pinkerton, Fuerte and Ardit avocados. Mehadrin stocks all of those varieties because, as Eisenberg pointed out, clients look to them for both their variety of fruit as well as the ability to supply good quantities.
Storms hit some trees earlier this week, though the extent of the damage is not yet known. Growers still need to go through all of the orchards to determine the extent of damage caused by hail, noted Eisenberg, and that will take about a week.
