Record avocado consumption expected during Super Bowl

With 111 million viewers in 2014, the Super Bowl is one of the most watched television events in the United States every year.

During the match, fans consume more food and drink than at any other time of the year, except for Thanksgiving, with guacamole being an inevitable classic.

An incredible 54 million kilos of fresh avocados are expected to be consumed in the week before the event; a figure that, if achieved, would mean an increase of 21% compared to the 2014 edition, according to the Hass Avocado Board.

98% of the avocados consumed during the event correspond to the Hass variety and 95% will be imported from Mexico.

Looking to boost consumption even further, Avocados From Mexico will be one of this year's major sponsors, becoming also the first fresh fruit and vegetable brand to advertise during the Super Bowl.

"We are very pleased about advertising during the 'Great Game', but more importantly, we are committed to offering consumers a nutritious way to enjoy healthier snacks, not just during the game, but also at any other time," said Álvaro Luque, President of Avocados from Mexico, in a statement.

Commercial breaks during the match are the most expensive in television, and thus the world's largest companies make use of them for their most important advertising campaigns, paying as much as $ 2.5 million for a 30 second ad.
