According to Procomer, total sales abroad rose by 0.2% in the first five months of the year when compared to the same period in 2013.

According Procomer's figures, pineapple exports amounted to 53.8% of all exports and boosted the overall growth of exports in both periods which were compared.

A total of 2,125 companies exported 4,857.3 million dollars in pineapples in the first five months of the year.

50% of Costa Rican companies sell their products to the Central American market, 43% to North America, 23% to the European Union, 13% to South America and Asia, and 12% to the Caribbean, 12%.

"We seek to foster the relationship with Central America, which is a natural market for Costa Rica, particularly for our small and medium enterprises. In that sense we will take some measures to focus on the opportunities offered by the region," said the Minister of Foreign Trade, Alexander Mora.
