Scholar®: Excellent results against cherry post-harvest fungal diseases

Maintaining the quality of cherries, reducing post-harvest losses and consequently increasing their shelf life so that they can arrive in perfect conditions to the final consumer is undoubtedly a paramount goal for the fruit's marketers and exporters in Spain.

To achieve this, the stonefruit sector has Scholar®, a post-harvest fungicide with both preventive and curative effects, low toxicity and high stability, which offers an effective solution against rot caused by Monilia spp., Botrytis cinerea and Rhizopus stolonifer, minimising the potential complaints about diseases being detected on arrival.

The 2013 campaign results have been excellent for Scholar® on CHERRIES. Its effectiveness rate has been greater than 97% and 98% against Botrytis and Monilia, respectively.

Cherries are a delicious fruit that has crossed all borders and Scholar's effectiveness confirms that this product is the solution for the control of stonefuit post-harvest diseases. The fact that more and more market leaders rely on it and apply it to be able to supply healthy fruit to both domestic and international markets is a testament to that.

Scholar® can be safely applied (classified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a Reduced Risk, low toxicity fungicide) and the level of residues found in stonefruit treated with it stands well below the MRLs established. It has also been deemed unnecessary to establish an acute reference dose (ARfD) for its active matter, fludioxonil.

In 2014, and for the third consecutive year, Scholar® has obtained the special authorisation from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, for its marketing and use in the stonefruit post-harvest.

Syngenta and TECNIDEX, partners and exclusive Scholar® distributors, have a professional team able to provide assistance to stonefruit producers and marketers, and also supply pre-harvest and post-harvest integrated solutions to help control all major diseases. In fact, the effectiveness of Scholar® has been confirmed to be significantly enhanced when combined with one of Syngenta's pre-harvest programmes, which help extend the fruit's shelf life.
