Good market for organic onions
The sales season of organic yellow onions is going well. The early demand from Germany in particular is causing a good price formation. The listing for organic onions at the Landbouwbeurs Noord- in Centraal Nederland (LNCN) in Emmeloord increased from 40 Euro on average at the turn of the year to around 50 Euro per 100 kilo this week, Nieuwe Oogst reports.
"The bottom of the market wasn't much lower than 38 Euro in the autumn," says purchaser Rudie Ensing of trading company OTC Holland in Lelystad. "There has been a good proportion between demand and supply all season."
On the market early Important buyers of the Dutch organic onions are Germany, France, England and the Scandinavian countries. According to Ensing, Germany in particular is on the market earlier than in previous years.
On the growers' side there is a lot of quiet in the sales this year, says Ensing. "The stocks are shrinking quickly and the quality of the onions still in storage is generally good."
Onions from Egypt The course of the rest of the sales season mainly depends on when the first organic onions from Egypt come onto the European market. "Then we have to wait and see if the packagers switch to the new onions at an early stage," says Ensing.
