The Guardia Civil in Cadiz, within the framework of "Tuberosum24" operation, dismantled a network involved in selling Egyptian-imported potatoes as domestically produced. The operation led to three arrests for fraud, document forgery, and industrial property violations. The accused altered tracking documents, packaging, and labels to misrepresent the product's origin. Out of over 500 tons of potatoes examined, 50 tons were fraudulently sold.
This investigation, conducted by the ROCA team, focused on agricultural sector inspections and identified irregularities in the importation and distribution of these potatoes in Spain. The fraud was discovered through the examination of traceability documents, revealing the substitution of Egyptian potatoes for a local Cadiz variety. This scheme allowed the perpetrators to profit by selling the imported potatoes at the price of the higher-valued local variety.
