US fruit sales up, tangerines show rapid growth

Sales of fruit in the United States were upin 2013 when compared to the previous year, with tangerines showing exceptionalgrowth during that period of time.

Total fruit sales were 7.6 percent higherin 2013 than they were in 2012, according to data from FreshLook Marketing.Berries, apples and bananas – the three biggest fruit categories measured in dollars – accounted for 18.5 percent, 15.1 percent and 12.4 percent,respectively, of all fruit sales in 2013. Tangerines accounted for the mostgrowth during the measured period with a boost in sales of 31 percent during2013. Tangerines also exhibited strong growth in sales as measured in pounds,with an increase of 27.7 percent during 2013.

Total fruit sales measured in poundsrose 4.3 percent during the period assessed, with bananas, melons and applesaccounting for 27.7 percent, 17.9 percent and 11.8 percent, respectively, ofall fruit sales measured in pounds.
