Breakthrough for Salanova in Hong Kong

Rijk Zwaan triggers Asian consumer with new products

During the Asian Fruit Logistica Rijk Zwaan presented the new melon variety Golden Emerald. The melon has been specially developed for the Asian market and is distinguished by quick ripening and a very sweet taste. According to Jan Doldersum this is the perfect melon for the Asian consumer. "This melon is appreciated by the consumer because of its special aroma, sweet taste and nice green colour."

Sharing a healthy future
This was also the first time that Rijk Zwaan showed its new house stile and slogan
at the fair. With the sentence 'sharing a future' it was made clear what Rijk Zwaan wanted to achieve with its activities. "In Asia we notice that the 'Love my Salad'-concept is becoming more and more popular. It was introduced here in May 2013 and it is running well. Now we have a kind of Chinese variant of Facebook for this healthy concept and it is much appreciated."

A special photograph is placed at the stand, namely a tomato shelf in an English supermarket. Jan: "The reason we chose this photograph is to show the Asian consumer, that there are many tomato varieties. And it certainly triggers, because many come to have a look." He stresses that the Asian market is very important. In 2030 more than half the world population will live in Asia. This is an up-and-coming and growing market and we can only anticipate by being present here."

Jan Doldersum has officially stopped as Chain Manager Asia and has returned to the Dutch location of Rijk Zwaan. Nevertheless he will travel to Asia regularly.

Breakthrough for Salanova in Hong Kong
Rijk Zwaan entered onto a cooperation arrangement with Jyco from Hong Kong last week. This company is the first to grow and market Salanova for the local market. Salanova is unique because of its many small leaves, which split up in one cutting movement. The product is already grown in almost the whole of Asia, amongst which Japan, China, Thailand and Indonesia, but not in Hong Kong as yet. "The climate here is very tropical, so vegetables need to be imported from all over the world," Jan Doldersum explains. "Our new partner Jyco will now for the first time start growing Salanova hydroponically for the local market. As a result less will have to be imported."

With the introduction of Salanova in Hong Kong cultivation possibilities open up. Jyco will also market the product as complete head, not only via retailers but also via own sales. "Together with Jyco we will tell the Salanova story to the consumers in Hong Kong in the coming period and convince them of the advantages of the 'one cut ready' principle."

Rijk Zwaan will assist Jyco as well with the cultivation of the product. In the past two years the improvement company has extensively screened the varieties, which are suitable for the circumstances in Hong Kong. "Together with Jyco we want to make it still easier for the 8 million citizens of Hong Kong to prepare tasty, healthy and varied salads."
