Potato market report for weeks 47-48:

'Business was quiet across the board'

Domestic supplies continued to dominate, with only occasional imports from France. Business was quiet across the board. In some cases, traders had to reduce their supplies slightly to avoid building up stocks. According to the German BLE, prices changed only rarely. In Berlin, the entire domestic range became slightly cheaper. Munich reported price reductions for the Bavarian Annabelle variety, while Colomba became slightly pricier.

North Rhine-Westphalia:
On the table potato market, the price premium for stored goods specified for North Rhine-Westphalia could establish itself on the market. A price premium for stored goods could also be achieved in other German growing regions. There are still no changes in the industrial potato market.

Baden-Württemberg:
Nationwide, there are reports of a potato crisis with falling prices. Potatoes are grown on 5,500 hectares in the state of Baden-Württemberg, and there has been no significant expansion in acreage, Michael Kinzinger explains. "These 5,500 hectares are actually too few potatoes for the approximately ten million consumers with a per person consumption of 25 kilograms in Baden-Württemberg," says the deputy chairman of the Heilbronn-Ludwigsburg Farmers' Association. Baden-Württemberg is actually an importing country and dependent on national exports of potatoes.

Thuringia:
According to the Thuringian State Office for Statistics, Thuringia had an above-average potato harvest in the current harvest year. On average, Thuringian farms harvested 38 tons of potatoes per hectare. This means that this year's result was around 2 tons per hectare, or 5 per cent lower than in 2024. However, it exceeded the long-term average for 2019/2024 by 3 tons per hectare or 10 per cent. The total harvest for this harvest year amounted to around 66,000 tons of potatoes. Compared to the previous year, 15,700 tons or 31 per cent more potatoes were harvested, which is also due to the expansion of the cultivation area.
According to the final results of the 2025 mainland use survey, this year's cultivation area covered around 1,700 hectares. Compared to the previous year, 500 hectares or 39 per cent more potatoes were planted. The long-term average for the years 2019/2024 was exceeded by just under 300 hectares or 20 per cent.

Lower Saxony:
The willingness of farmers to sell remained high, and demand from southwestern Germany increased slightly. This is according to the latest BVNON market update.

Rhineland-Palatinate:
The tense situation on the potato market continues. With the first frosty nights, goods from non-frost-proof warehouses are flooding the market at rock-bottom prices. On the other hand, storage surcharges for high-quality, sweated-through loads from temperature-controlled storage facilities are becoming prevalent on the market. The producer association's price quotation is being published for the first time this season for stored goods and includes corresponding surcharges.

Schleswig-Holstein:
The table potato market in this region remains unchanged from the previous week. Abundant supply continues to weigh on market conditions, even though sorting from storage facilities is increasing. There is currently no momentum on the demand side. However, market participants are hoping for some stimulating demand impulses in the coming weeks. In the food retail sector, too, there is an increase in advertising campaigns with very low offer prices. Nevertheless, it is assumed that this will not be sufficient to raise the price level. The only consolation is slight storage surcharges, which now seem to be gaining ground in this region as well. However, these are only being paid for loads of impeccable quality. There is still hardly any activity on the forward market, and the only traded April 26 forward contract has fallen again.

Hesse:
In the state of Hesse, prices for packaged goods have risen significantly compared to the previous week.

Saxony:
In Saxony, there have been no significant price changes compared to the previous week.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania:
The Wulksfelde estate in Tangstedt (Stormarn district) is enjoying a bountiful potato harvest this year. However, due to the large supply and steady demand, the farm, like many others in the state, is facing falling prices and full warehouses. A potato rescue campaign is now being launched to counteract this and, at the same time, support people in need.
