NSW government tightens controls to block potato mop-top virus

NSW Farmers has welcomed the state government's decision to tighten biosecurity controls aimed at preventing Potato Mop-Top Virus (PMTV) from entering New South Wales.

Under a new control order issued by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), potatoes, soil, materials, and equipment associated with potato production in infected areas will be prohibited from entering NSW.

PMTV, a highly transmissible plant virus currently detected in Tasmania, is known to cause crop losses and can remain in soil for extended periods. NSW growers have raised concerns about the long-term production challenges the virus may pose if introduced to the state.

Oaklands potato grower and NSW Farmers member Geoff Moar said the announcement provides reassurance to the industry following calls for stronger border measures. "This is a virus that could devastate our industry if it enters NSW, and border controls to confine the virus to Tasmania are the right call to protect potato production here in our state," he said.

Moar noted that the virus affects tuber quality, and its persistence in soil makes eradication difficult. "The virus doesn't just damage potatoes but can persist in soil for many years, creating ongoing production problems for potato growers," he said.

He added that early action is essential in managing biosecurity risks. "There's no second chances when it comes to biosecurity, and clearly, our government has stepped up to the plate to protect our industry," he said.

The new restrictions apply immediately and are aimed at preventing the spread of PMTV while investigations and monitoring continue.
