Anthony De Ieso - Thorndon Park Produce

Kale has become a niche vegetable, no longer bought in the weekly shop

Kale is not a main line for Anthony De Ieso at Thorndon Park Produce, but he does have it available all year round.

"We only have roughly half a hectare planted throughout the year," said Anthony.

Despite the increased demand, the volume grown at Thorndon Park Produce has decreased. "The more popular kale became, the more growers started to grow it. As prices are too low for mass production, we just keep a small amount available for our customers.

"We used to grow three varieties: Green, red, and Tuscan. However, demand for red and Tuscan varieties was not worth the cost to plant and grow, so we just stick to the green.

"Now the demand for kale has definitely backed right off. I think after its popularity with becoming a superfood phased out, it's become more of a niche vegetable that consumers are not readily buying with their regular weekly shop."
