Myanmar targets new avocado export markets in India and Russia

The Myanmar Avocado Producers and Exporters Association (MAVO) expects to exceed 10,000 tons of avocado exports during the 2025–2026 financial year, with plans to expand into new markets, including India and Russia.

In the 2023–2024 season, Myanmar exported about 7,600 tons of avocados, increasing to over 8,000 tons in 2024–2025. Thailand remains the main destination for exports, though discussions are underway to diversify trade partners.

"Discussions for avocado export to India and Russia are ongoing. Different types of avocado peak in different seasons. This year's export volume is at least 10,000 tons. The prices are fluctuating at the present time. They may vary depending on the seasons," said an official of MAVO.

Avocado cultivation in Myanmar has a history of more than 75 years, with production concentrated in Shan State, Chin State, Sagaing Region, and the Mandalay Region's PyinOoLwin area. Commercially viable varieties such as Hass, Buccaneer, and Amara are mainly produced in PyinOoLwin, Ywangan, Yatsauk, and Taunggyi for export markets.

Hass and Buccaneer varieties are primarily propagated through grafting and are distributed to major domestic markets in Yangon and Mandalay.

MAVO continues to promote cultivation practices aimed at improving yield and quality to meet international market requirements. The association also advises growers to focus on varieties with stronger export potential to maintain competitiveness as Myanmar's avocado sector seeks to expand into new markets.
