Korean producers learn Murcia melons' secrets

Yesterday in Murcia, PROEXPORT, the Association of Fruit and Vegetable Producers and Exporters of the Region of Murcia, welcomed 21 Korean melon producers who are members of Korea's National Melon Union. This visit to Spain is part of an academic and agronomic program aimed at exploring some of the world's top melon producers.

José Cánovas Ruiz, president of Proexport's melon and watermelon sector, welcomed the Korean delegation led by President Lee Juh-Yun. "The purpose of our visit is to observe directly the best agricultural practices and biotechnological innovations implemented by Murcian producers, whose reputation in these areas is recognized worldwide," stated Lee, expressing his gratitude to the Murcian association for its collaboration."We are pleased to share our experience with our Korean colleagues. As melon growers and traders, we are also eager to learn from growers and agribusinesses in other regions of the world who, like us, face the challenge of feeding millions of consumers," Cánovas responded.

In the morning, the Korean delegation visited Proexport's offices in Murcia, where they attended a technical presentation covering the production, agronomic, varietal, and commercial aspects of melon cultivation in the Region of Murcia, Spain, and Europe. The presentation was led by Mr. Cánovas, Fernando Gómez, the director of Proexport, and Loli Molina, the head of Agricultural Sustainability.

Afterward, the Korean delegation visited Melones el Abuelo, a partner of Proexport. They were welcomed by Pilar Teruel, the company's Quality Manager. Teruel guided them through the selection, handling, packaging, quality control, and logistics processes for the piel de sapo melon. "This is a very important variety in the Region of Murcia, where historically the growers take advantage of the climatic conditions and their agronomic knowledge to produce top-quality fruit with a very sweet flavor and crunchy texture," she said.

This melon has an intensely green exterior with distinctive longitudinal stripes and contains juicy white flesh that is exquisite on the palate. Korean growers also sampled it during their visit. In Spain, it is undeniably the favorite among consumers, especially when compared to other varieties like galia, yellow, cantaloupe, or charetais melons, which are also cultivated in the country but are more popular abroad.
