India resumes onion exports to Bangladesh

A consignment of 100 metric tonnes (MT) of onions arrived at Sonamasjid Land Port in Chapainawabganj, Bangladesh, on Thursday evening, marking the resumption of imports from India after an eight-month suspension.

The shipment, transported by four trucks, entered through the land port and was handled by Panama Sonamasjid Port Link Limited, the private operator responsible for port activities. Mainul Islam, the company's manager, confirmed that this was the first delivery since India halted onion exports.

Local traders expressed expectations that renewed imports from India would contribute to stabilising prices in the domestic market.

The decision to resume imports follows an announcement by Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin on August 12, stating that the government would allow onion imports to address the recent price increases.
