Transnet's Cape Town Container Terminal (CTCT) has increased its export volumes by 8% since the start of the deciduous fruit season, compared to the previous year. The season commenced in December 2022, with pome fruit, including apples and pears, along with berries, table grapes, and stone fruit destined for international markets.
According to Transnet Port Terminals (TPT), more than 118,381 TEUs have been shipped from CTCT in the face of challenging weather conditions like wind and fog. To address delays and backlogs caused by these conditions, the terminal has implemented recovery plans while maintaining operational efficiency with seven vessels currently at anchorage.
TPT noted efforts to enhance workforce capacity across all levels to ensure operational performance, involving increased management visibility and stakeholder collaboration for a productive season. Andiswa Dlanga, TPT managing executive for the Western Cape region, emphasized the role in cold chain logistics by stating, "As a key role player in cold chain logistics, we continue to put all hands on deck in ensuring that seasonal fruit reaches the market in good condition." Dlanga further acknowledged the influence of their activities on the national economy.
