Carrots and parsnips see a resurgence at South Australian Produce Market

As the weather cools down, strong volumes of winter vegetables are available at the South Australian Produce Market. The staples — potatoes, carrots, and pumpkins — are all in good supply, and the is good availability of parsnips, leeks, beetroot, zucchini, Brussels sprouts, and kalettes. All are locally grown within South Australia's diverse and productive horticultural regions.

"Winter staples like carrots remain incredibly popular, especially with carrots gaining new attention thanks to the viral ribbon carrot salad trending on TikTok," said Penny Reidy, Marketing, BD & Communications Manager at South Australian Produce Market. "Parsnips are also enjoying a resurgence as more consumers rediscover their earthy winter flavour, and quality has been excellent this season. Brussels sprouts continue to grow in popularity, especially with new preparation trends such as shredding and air frying, which offer a fresh take on a traditional winter veg."

"Most winter vegetables are currently in strong supply with good sizing and quality. One exception is broccoli, which has seen supply tighten in recent weeks due to weather variability. However, there are plenty of great substitutes available — including brussels sprouts, cabbage, leeks, potatoes, and parsnips — keeping shelves well stocked and consumers happy."

Like much of the country, South Australia has felt the impact of ongoing dry conditions and low rainfall, creating challenges for growers. Despite this, supply has held strong across key winter lines. The Adelaide Hills are delivering good winter vegetable crops, and growers on the Northern Adelaide Plains are reporting steady volumes from their glasshouse operations.

"Brussels sprouts are particularly abundant right now, with growers reporting an excellent season. Zucchini is also in peak supply, with strong volumes moving through the wholesale market and into independent fruit and veg stores across the state."
