Onside launches shared farm safety platform

Agri-tech company Onside has launched PCBU Enterprise, a digital platform aimed at improving the management of shared safety responsibilities across agricultural supply chains in Australia and New Zealand.

Developed in collaboration with ANZCO Foods, one of New Zealand's major beef and lamb exporters, the platform is designed to address ongoing challenges in managing joint safety obligations between enterprises, contractors, suppliers, and transport operators.

PCBU Enterprise enables multiple parties across the supply chain to coordinate risk management efforts. It allows agribusinesses to map shared responsibilities, maintain real-time communication, generate compliance records, and produce inter-business risk reports. The platform integrates with Onside's existing mobile app, which provides tools for rural risk management, including digital check-ins, property mapping, health and safety monitoring, and contractor oversight.

According to Onside, the app has recorded data from over 21,000 mapped rural properties across New Zealand and Australia, logging activity related to contractor and visitor movements, as well as the operation of machinery and plant equipment. This data is used to help users manage health, safety, and biosecurity risks.

Onside CEO Ryan Higgs said the platform was developed to provide clearer coordination where different business operations intersect, such as on accessways, loading yards, and shared paddocks. "You can't hide behind organisational layers when safety fails," Higgs noted, referencing the complexity of responsibility in shared agricultural environments. He added that the system helps implement WorkSafe's "3 Cs": consult, cooperate, and coordinate across multiple persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs).

The collaboration between Onside and ANZCO began nearly two years ago. ANZCO initiated the partnership to find a more structured approach to managing shared safety responsibilities across its producer network and transport partners.

The platform has also received support from the National Livestock and Transport Safety Council (NLT&SC), which represents New Zealand's livestock transport sector. NLT&SC President Derek Foley described the system as a step forward for improving on-site safety for drivers. He noted that the council's members had been involved in the development and rollout of the platform and welcomed its introduction.

The launch comes amid heightened industry awareness around workplace health and safety. Several recent legal cases involving breaches of safety regulations have underlined the importance of clearly defined responsibilities between businesses working together.

PCBU Enterprise is now available in both New Zealand and Australia and is intended to support agricultural businesses in coordinating their safety and compliance obligations more effectively across supply chain partnerships.
