Orbcomm has introduced CrewView, a new onboard visibility solution designed to help vessel crews monitor and manage refrigerated and dry containers in real time while at sea. The system is aimed at addressing a key gap in container tracking during maritime transit by enabling early detection of issues such as temperature deviations and power failures.
According to Orbcomm CEO Sameer Agrawal, the solution is intended to automate monitoring tasks, support timely responses to container-related problems, and improve decision-making onboard ships. The system provides real-time alerts to crews via SMS notifications on mobile devices, without requiring satellite connectivity. This enables continuous monitoring of smart containers while in transit, with data also relayed to onshore teams through vessel-to-shore transmissions.
CrewView integrates with Orbcomm's Maritime platform, which displays container loading and stowage data through interactive maps showing bay, row, and tier locations. The system supports integration with third-party platforms through APIs and can incorporate alerts from non-Orbcomm devices.
The solution was piloted across several global shipping lines, with reported improvements in onboard response times and cargo security. CrewView builds on existing technology from Vobal Technologies, LLC, whose assets were acquired by Orbcomm in May 2025. The acquisition marks a continuation of Orbcomm's efforts to enhance its maritime technology offerings.
