NSW Farmers has expressed its support for the Coalition's recent commitment to introduce a new initiative aimed at helping first-time farm buyers. On Wednesday, the Coalition unveiled its Plan for Agriculture, which includes a promise to develop a dedicated financial scheme to assist those looking to purchase their first farm.
Martin Murray, Chair of the NSW Young Farmers' Council, said the announcement was a positive step for the state's peak farming body, which has been advocating for such a scheme to support young farmers facing mounting challenges. "The average age of a new farmer is now 45 years old, and that's because young farmers simply cannot afford to get in the game," Mr Murray said.
"Farmland prices are sky-high—along with the costs that come with them—and there's a real risk that the next generation will be unable to purchase the land they need to feed or clothe our future."
He added that interest rate cuts alone would not be sufficient to enable young farmers to enter the industry. Mr Murray also urged the Federal Labor Government to match the Coalition's commitment, calling for bipartisan support for future farmers. "First home buyers receive support, and it's only fair that the same is available to those buying their first farm," he said.
"Farms are homes, but more importantly, they're businesses that feed and clothe the world."
"Our future depends on farmers—but we won't have any left if they can't get their foot in the door of some farmland, and fast."
