Sokhna port sets container volume record in Q1 2025

DP World Sokhna, UAE, handled 285,000 TEUs in the first quarter of 2025, marking the highest quarterly volume since the port began operations nearly two decades ago. This figure represents a 26% increase over planned volumes, highlighting the port's expanding role in regional trade and its contribution to Egypt's broader economic activity.

Since assuming control of the port in 2008, DP World has invested over $1.3 billion in upgrades, including capacity expansions and digital systems to improve operational efficiency. These developments aim to accommodate larger vessels and improve access to global supply chains.

Avnash Iyer, COO and Acting CEO of DP World Egypt, commented that the volume increase signals Sokhna's growing importance in the logistics sector. He noted that further infrastructure development, including the upcoming Sokhna Logistics Park and expansion of freight forwarding services, is intended to meet demand from Egypt's evolving market.

The port's handling of refrigerated cargo continues to be a key area of growth. With cold chain infrastructure and streamlined logistics processes, Sokhna plays an increasingly important role in supporting the country's agricultural exports, particularly perishable goods destined for international markets.

DP World Sokhna is positioned as a central hub within a broader supply chain network, connecting Egyptian businesses to trade routes and global markets.
