Wisconsin is poised to sustain its position as the foremost cranberry producer globally, with an anticipated harvest of 4.9 million barrels, as per the USDA National Agriculture Statistic Services (NASS). The state's cranberry marshes, spanning 21,000 acres across 20 counties, contribute nearly 61 percent to the national output.
Despite challenges, including a previous year's drought, Wisconsin's production has consistently outpaced other states, with a recent tally reaching 5.47 million barrels. The collective U.S. yield is projected at 8.24 million barrels for the current year.
Cranberry cultivation stands as the state's premier fruit crop in both scale and economic contribution, generating $1 billion and supporting numerous local jobs. The Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association highlights the industry's resilience and the critical role of growers' expertise in sustaining production levels. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the cranberry's designation as the state's official fruit. With over 250 family farms, the harvest season is a critical period, with the majority of the crop processed for various products, while approximately five percent is sold as fresh fruit.
