The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has provided over 500 smallholder farmers in Edo State with seeds to enhance tomato production. Samuel Owoicho, the State Director, facilitated the distribution through the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), targeting an increase in self-sufficiency and a reduction in market prices for tomatoes. The initiative also aims to improve food security across the nation. Owoicho highlighted the initiative's alignment with Nigeria's agricultural potential, emphasizing the country's fertile soil and favourable climate.
Training on best practices for tomato cultivation was provided to ensure optimal yield and quality. The ministry has collaborated with research institutions and seed companies to develop improved seed varieties resistant to common pests and diseases, adapted to the local climate.
Subsidized access to fertilizers, pesticides, and other farming essentials is also part of the support to alleviate the cost burden on farmers. Bako Dogwo, the state Chairman of AFAN, lauded the government's efforts, noting the potential of this initiative to bolster tomato cultivation and reduce import dependency, ultimately benefiting the state's agricultural development and addressing the high cost of tomatoes.
