Pumpkin prices plunge in New Zealand

In June, New Zealand witnessed a 57% decrease in pumpkin prices compared to the previous year, as reported by the latest Stats NZ FPI data. Brigit Corson, Foodstuffs North Island's Head of Meat and Produce, highlighted the value whole crown pumpkins, a favoured variety in New Zealand, bring to consumers due to their large size.

Following Cyclone Gabrielle's impact on the 2023 crop, which led to limited availability and increased prices, this year has seen a turnaround. Optimal growing conditions have resulted in high yields and large-sized pumpkins, ensuring that one pumpkin offers extensive use.

Pumpkins in New Zealand are planted in spring and harvested in autumn. Unearthed Produce, a key supplier to Foodstuffs North Island, including New World, PAK'nSAVE, and Four Square stores, has observed a strong recovery in pumpkin crops. General Manager Ben Buchanan noted the importance of favourable weather conditions for pumpkin farming, stating that this year's conditions have facilitated solid yields and abundant supply across the country.

Corson also mentioned the variety of pumpkins available, such as butternuts, buttercups, butterkins, supermarket squash, and spaghetti squash, and the various purchasing options, including whole, cut, diced, and ready-to-cook, catering to different culinary requirements.
