Area under cultivation increased considerably

Tripura's queen pineapple exported to Holland and Dubai

The government of Tripura has initiated the export of Queen Pineapple, a fruit which has been granted a geographical indication (GI) tag, to international markets. This initiative is supported by the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC), SIMPET, and the state government. A significant shipment of 600 kg of Queen Pineapple has already been dispatched to Oman, with the produce being transported to Guwahati for subsequent air freight to the destination. Furthermore, an order for 5 tons from Dubai and discussions for approximately 30 tons to Holland are in progress.

The export endeavors have been part of a broader strategy to enhance the livelihood of local farmers by securing better market prices for their produce. Since 2018, under the current administration, Queen Pineapples have found new markets in Dubai, Qatar, and Bangladesh, contributing to an international export volume of 33 tons and domestic distribution amounting to 12,500 tons. Besides pineapples, the state has also successfully exported other agricultural products including jackfruits, wood apple, tamarind, ginger, and betel leaf, totaling significant quantities. This export initiative has not only improved the income of farmers but also expanded the area under pineapple cultivation from 595 hectares to 5,654 hectares post-2018.
