Zespri's leadership transition and quality focus in New Zealand

Zespri's outgoing CEO, Dan Mathieson, reflects on his tenure and the challenges faced by the company, particularly highlighting the 2022 harvest as a significant low point due to labour shortages and subsequent poor fruit quality, which led to a considerable effort to improve standards across the supply chain.

The company, under Mathieson's leadership, implemented a series of measures including increased quality checks and audits to prevent such issues in the future. Mathieson, who is set to join Driscoll's in the US, leaves Zespri on a positive note with a record harvest and strong market performance, especially in Japan and South Korea.

Zespri's focus remains on expanding its market reach, including in the United States and Vietnam, and maintaining its premium position in the global kiwifruit market. The company also aims to increase production in the Northern Hemisphere to meet year-round demand and retain its competitive edge. Jason Te Brake, previously chief operating officer, will succeed Mathieson as CEO.
