In the Kurdistan Region, the potato harvest has commenced, with expectations for this year's yield to surpass domestic consumption needs. The Nawkur plains, located in the Bardarash district of Duhok province, are a significant area for potato cultivation, with over 3,000 hectares dedicated to this crop annually. The anticipated production for the region is projected to exceed 650,000 tons, significantly more than the local requirement of 100,000 tons. The surplus production has led the government to focus on marketing and exporting the excess, particularly targeting Gulf countries.
Local farmer Mohsin Abdullah, who has cultivated over 100 hectares with potatoes, noted the high quality of this year's crop. The Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources has highlighted the importance of exports for the agricultural sector, with efforts being made to facilitate the export of the surplus. Agricultural experts have underscored the potential benefits of exporting, including encouraging local farmers to improve and expand their operations. Modern facilities for testing and storage have been established to support the quality and preservation of the harvest. Since 2009, the Nawkur plain has emerged as a key hub for potato production in both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq overall.
