After a hiatus of five and a half months, onion imports from India have recommenced via the Sonamasjid Land Port in Chapainawabganj. The Indian government has levied a 40 percent duty on onion exports, presenting challenges for importers.
This development follows the lifting of an export ban by India on May 4, with imports resuming on May 9 despite the imposed duty. Importers indicate that the cost of onions from India, inclusive of the 40 percent duty and transportation, totals to Tk 61 per kg for delivery to Bangladesh. The prior suspension of imports led to a scarcity, prompting a price increase in the Chapainawabganj market. The cost composition includes Rs 17 per kg for onions in India, with an additional Rs 19 for the duty and about Rs 7 for transportation.
